Veneers can conceal distracting dental defects and completely transform a grin in as few as two appointments, but it took time to develop these appliances into the popular cosmetic treatment we know today. In fact, these devices only become practical as a long-term solution for cracks, chips, gaps, stains, and misshapenness within the past few decades, and they are now the open secret behind the flawless smiles of many celebrities. Here’s a guide to how veneers evolved and how they may be able to help you.

When Were Veneers Invented?

Veneers were first used to alter the appearance of an actor’s smile for a scene in a 1928 Hollywood movie, but these devices were only temporary since they couldn’t withstand the pressure of chewing and the cement holding them in place didn’t last very long. However, the work of Dr. Michael Buonocore in 1959 and Drs. Simonsen and Calamia in the 1980s led to the development of techniques that made it possible for veneers to stay attached to the teeth for long periods.

What Are Modern Veneers Like?

Today’s veneers are crafted from beautiful ceramic materials to be remarkably lifelike, and they can last for up to fifteen years if they receive excellent care. They are frequently used to conceal extensive chips, cracks, gaps, and stains with restorations that mimic the appearance of natural enamel, and they are also sometimes used to rebuild or reshape teeth that are injured or misshapen. In some cases, they can address minor dental misalignments without orthodontic work.

How Are Modern Veneers Placed?

Placing veneers typically takes two appointments. The first will begin with the patient receiving an appropriate anesthetic to ensure that they feel no pain, and they may also receive sedation treatment if necessary. Then, the dentist will carefully remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth being treated, take bite impressions of them, and fit them with temporary veneers. The bite impressions will be sent to a trusted dental lab that will craft the final restorations, and the patient will be scheduled for a second appointment several weeks later.

When the final veneers are ready, the patient will return to the dental office. Then, the dentist will remove the temporary devices, cement the final veneers in place, and make any last-minute adjustments. The patient will then be ready to show the world their gorgeous new grin.

Veneers can be an excellent way to achieve a more beautiful smile. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best cosmetic dental solution for you.
